A fat or oil is a triglyceride, which means that three fatty acids of various carbon lengths are attached to a glycerine backbone. The strong alkali is either sodium (for bars) or potassium (for liquids) hydroxide. The saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerine is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (no alkali remains). Quality soap-making consists in great part in choosing the right proportions of the right oils with their different fatty acids. Most commercial soaps skimp on quality because of cost, and use lots of tallow from beef fat with a little bit of coconut or palm kernel oil. Our unsurpassed soaps use olive, hemp, and palm oils instead of tallow, and use three to four times more coconut oil than commercial soaps. It cleans as well as any soap I have ever used. I use it to clean bicycle chain oil from my hands and it comes off easily. That’s even when it’s diluted.
But what I really like is that it’s as good as canned shaving creams for shaving. It shaves as close and doesn’t scrape.
When I’m on the road for work or off the road going biking, hiking, or, otherwise, I take Dr. Bronners with me. Nothing is as refreshing after a long day as showering and shaving with The Miracle Soap.
My husband bought the small bottle on a whim and we’ve been hooked ever since, except now we only purchase the gallon size.
I have found it to be perfectly useful for everything (okay slightly less useful for dishes, but we have very hard water) and a tiny amount goes a long way. We use 1/8 cup for a large washer load and it does an amazing job. Did I mention that I have 3 kids and my husband is a construction worker? If this soap can clean our laundry, it can clean anything!
We use it for the bath and shower, washing our pets and sometimes I re-read the label just to smile.
I have been using the peppermint version of Dr. Bronner’s soap since 1969 and have never been disappointed. It is refreshing, effective and unique among cleaning agents. The strong philosophic message on the label is simply icing on the cake.
This is a great soap, shampoo, dish washing soap, laundry soap and best of all it is a soap, not a detergent, and is biodegradable. Dr. Bronner was way ahead of his time on this. I buy it by the gallon and mostly use it daily as a bath soap and shampoo. Best I’ve ever used.
